PaintKit help

Hi gents, i've done a bit of repainting in the past in Fs9 but this is my first foray into FSX. I'm having a bit of trouble putting the parts of the kit together so that everything aligns correctly and wondered if someone could give me a few tips on how it's done correctly. I've done a search on the net but the CS paintkits seem to be a bit of a mystery. I'm trying to do a Britannia repaint circa the 1970's. I tried to post an image but i have'nt made enough posts yet to be allowed to do so. I've completed the paint but there are little errors in alignment of the fuselage stripes and there seems to be an overlap where the middle and front sections join that are taking out a bit of the lettering of the "Britannia" on the fuselage.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Alan,

you might have a look at this older thread

http://captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1337012845

guess there is useful info inside at least to have an idea how you can assemble the different textures and where they overlap.
good luck,
Lex

Hi Lex.

I have two questions. However. The first one requires some info before the question can be asked:

1) In the instructions here: http://captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1337012845/7#7, when you talk about making large image and adding guides at Horizontal positions of  0 - 1958 - 2048 - 3915 - 4006 - 5963, the horizontal line 0 is at the very top. 1958 through 4006 appear on it going down, but 5963 is way below the lowest pixels of the image which are at 4096. In the attached image, there is a gap from the top of the image, down to the first line, from the front front of the image to the first line, which means they can't be at pixel 0. Also, the image extends beyond the guide lines on the right side and the bottom. What is the actual size of the new image that you place 04 through 09 on to? And what is the actual pixel location of all the guide lines? Mine looks a mess.

Here is your attached image:

See how there is a gap from the edges of the image before the blue guide lines.

2) How do you get the 04 through 09 psd files, from the paintkit, to sit within the guide lines? Mine keep ending up all overr the place. Sad

Sorry to bother you, but I am trying to do my first Captain Sim repaint ever. Shocked

Hello Mark, well yes my English might be confusing and I always have problems with horizontal and vertical. What I tried to say is on the horizontal ruler (the upper one) position. In fact it's a vertical (blue ruler) line.

Here is your attached image:
http://captainsim.org/yabbfiles/Attachments/tn_Alaska_N742AS_paintFuse.jpg
See how there is a gap from the edges of the image before the blue guide lines.

What software are you using? In PS with my large file open, I open a paintkit psd file texture (f.expl.: cs737_04_T.psd), I create a group on top of all layers and move them inside that group. Right click on the new group, click duplicate then choose the "large file" name from the select box in the opening window and click ok. Do this for the remaining 5 textures 05, 06, 07, 08 & 09. Once they are all in the "large file", select the Free Transform tool and move each group in place (use . 04 goes in the rh lwr corner then continue  clockwise with 05, 06 in the lh lwr corner, 07 lh upper corner, 08 and 09 in the rh upper corner.

Sorry to bother you, but I am trying to do my first Captain Sim repaint ever. Shocked

Never mind, you're not bothering me at all. Give me a bit of time over the weekend and I will try to come up with better explanations and pics while doing another repaint.
best regards, Lex

Hi Alan, you're welcome. It's not easy to start especially with this paint-kit. Requires a bit of patience and training. And there is no rule on how to do things. Every painter has his own methods and tricks. Experiment and keep it simple at the beginning. Play around with your PSP's tools and don't try to be perfect the first time. There are a lot of tutorials and vids available on the web which have nothing to do with aircraft but good for painting skills. Choose a livery like the one I did lately Air Gabon which is more or less straight forward and you quickly have a positive result which is important as well. (CS did even lazier with Finnair  Grin Grin ) Nothing's worse than a never ending paint-job.
Good luck, Lex

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply Aflex, i will have a play around with it and hopefully will eventually have a livery i can use  Cheesy . This Captain Sim 737 is a fantastic bit of modelling and is by far my favourite aircraft to use in FSX . The old Britannia red, white and blue livery brings back many memories of my first flight back in the early 70's...nope not telling you how old i am  Grin .
As you can see the livery does'nt match and the main font is too small and missing a slight piece of the "a" it's the "B" on the other side. A bit more trial and error i think, more likely a complete re-do.

Well Alan, I have some very good memories with Britannia. Had my initial 737-200 Technical training at Luton in the early 80s. Good old days. 3 weeks electrical systems and some great people! And then there was this English pub downtime Luxemburg city called "The Britannia" we used to hang around after work. Yeah yeah great memories are connected to this lady's name.
take care, Lex
(p.s. will have a 5 in front this year  Huh but feel like 15)

This year I will have a pair of 5's, but I still feel like I'm 18. If you were to ask my wife, she would tell you that I still act like an 18yo too! Shocked Grin

Sounds like a good idea. Except that somehow I don't think I can drink like I did when I was young. I just don't care for it anymore. My kids often say they want to see me get drunk! But that hasn't happened yet. Grin

Yes, the idea is good but it's definitively no longer like with 18 for me. But nothing against a good beer from time to time.
Cheers, Lex
